Women in Construction: Modern Niagara Champions Inclusion

At Modern Niagara, we recognize the value of fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization and are committed to eliminating barriers faced by members of equity-deserving groups including women in the construction industry.

In celebration of Women in Construction Week celebrated each year during the first full week of March and International Women’s Day marked annually on March 8th, we’re proud to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of women in our organization who are fundamental pillars in our operational growth and success.

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme “Inspire Inclusion” serves as a call to action reminding us of the importance of creating a world where all women feel respected and valued. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) vision is to build an organization where everyone has access to the same opportunities, experience equitable outcomes, and can thrive and reach their full potential.

As we continue to reflect on this year’s theme, we recognize that there’s more work to be done. Among the many challenges facing the construction industry, women are historically outnumbered resulting in increased calls to hire and encourage more women to join the field. Our commitment to DEI involves amplifying the voices of women and providing support to advance inclusion in our workplace.

In 2023, we conducted multiple focus group sessions with equity-deserving groups including women with the goal of actively listening to make meaningful impact. These discussions further strengthened our commitment to advancing gender equity and inclusion.

“As part of our ongoing commitment, Modern Niagara has a goal this year of establishing a Women’s Affinity Group to encourage a safe space that promotes belonging and celebrates diversity. We’re also committing to developing a comprehensive learning journey available to all leaders and employees to raise awareness of gender biases and stereotypes,” says Mariangela Panetta, our Vice President of People and Culture.

As a leading multi-trade contractor in Canada, we’re focused on attracting top talent through equitable hiring practices. Within our organization, we understand the crucial role that our leaders play in fostering a culture that champions inclusion. Our organization’s commitment to DEI is reflected through our comprehensive policies and ongoing training.  Earlier this year, Modern Niagara enrolled as a member with the Canadian Association of Women in Construction (CAWIC) – a non-profit organization with a mission to facilitate the success of women in construction and related fields.

Our work in building and maintaining vital infrastructure that sustains our communities takes place on job sites and offices across Canada. As such, the health and safety of our employees matters most to us. A report from the CSA Group revealed that women face increased safety risks by not being able to secure appropriate fitting personal protective equipment (PPE). We’ve taken a proactive response to ensure that all women on our job sites have access to appropriate fitting PPE as required, and available resources to report any safety concerns so that they can be addressed.

“While Women make up 50.9% of the population in Canada, they only represent 9.2% of the Red Seal skilled trades workforce. There is a tremendous opportunity here to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse workforce,” explains Megan Mathes, our Senior Manager of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Through our unwavering commitment to DEI, we strive to create a work environment where everyone can thrive and excel, aligning with the core values that define us as an organization. We know that change requires commitment and intentional action. We’re keen to continue listening and embracing diversity to help drive meaningful change.
