This complex inner-city development involved the relocation of an existing hospital and preservation of a neighbouring heritage building. The resulting “campus of care” is a 680,000 sq.ft. acute-care facility housing 472 beds over 10 floors. It integrates patient care, research, and teaching in complex chronic disease and disability.
We provided complete mechanical design and build services for this complex inner-city project. One of the key services we provided was Building Information Modeling (BIM)/3D CAD for the entire building.
We also provided unique mechanical solutions, including:
- Reduced heating system size with a three-riser system
- Reduced number of condenser pumps and matched flows of chillers with automatic balancing valves
Our mechanical services included heating, cooling, and control systems; as well as sheet metal, heat gas, mechanical ironing, and plumbing. The project included more than 2,000 fixtures, 1,000 reheating coils, and a prime water chill system.
The new hospital is being delivered under the Government of Ontario’s Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP) model. It was recently lauded by KPMG’s Infrastructure 100 Report as one of the world’s most interesting projects. In 2016, it won an Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
