History

For more than 50 years, Modern Niagara has made buildings work! Today, the we provide full mechanical, electrical, building controls, and building services across Canada.

Historical Timeline

1959 – Jan Kaminski and Joe Clark open up a local plumbing services shop in Ottawa, Ontario, called Modern Plumbing.

1961 – Niagara Mechanical is founded, providing mechanical services in Toronto. The firm incorporates in 1969.

1973 – Joe Clark sells his shares and Jan Kaminski invites three new shareholders into the company: Jack O’Brien, Bob Dube, and John McAninch.

1981 – The principals of Modern Mechanical establish two additional companies: Colonnade Leasing and Colonnade Developments (1985). Together, these companies undertake suburban real-estate development in Ottawa throughout the 1980s.

1989 – Modern Mechanical and Colonnade Developments separate. Jack O’Brien and John McAninch are now sole owners of Modern Mechanical.

1992 – Modern Mechanical makes its first acquisition. The purchase of Gorlan Mechanical, also located in Ottawa, is the beginning of what will become a much larger presence throughout the Ottawa region.

1995 – Modern Mechanical acquires Robertair, a company specializing in HVAC. This year, the company is also recognized for its stellar management with the prestigious award “Canada’s 50 Best Managed Private Companies.”

1997 – Modern Mechanical creates Integrated Control Solutions Inc., an Ottawa-based building controls service provider.

1999 – Modern Mechanical Inc. rebrands as Modern Niagara Group Inc. and takes its first step toward becoming national through the acquisition of Niagara Mechanical in Toronto.

The company’s stellar management practices are again recognized with the “Canada’s 50 Best Managed Private Companies” award.

2000 – Modern Niagara creates a  Special Projects division in Ottawa and Toronto to bridge HVAC services and large construction projects and to meet customers’ requirements for mechanical retrofits, tenant fit-ups, and energy solutions project.

2002 – Modern Niagara Group becomes a Platinum member of “Canada’s Best Managed Companies”

2004-2006 – Modern Niagara Group continues its expansion with the strategic purchase of three HVAC Services companies in Ontario: Niagara Mechanical Services (Toronto), Air Force Inc. (Toronto), and Brough Mechanical Services (Kingston).

2007 – Modern Niagara Group acquires an East-coast company in Halifax and Atlantica Mechanical is born, with the Halifax-based management team shareholders. Five additional service locations are also acquired in Ontario this year.

2008 – Modern Niagara Alberta is born and is awarded the contract for the 50-storey office tower in Calgary, 8th Avenue Place.

2009 – Modern Niagara Group celebrates its 50th anniversary. There are now 11 companies in the Group operating in seven provinces, and more than 1,200 employees nationwide.

2010 – Modern Niagara acquires DMC Mechanical Inc., a sheet metal company, to support growth in the Toronto market and expand design capabilities for design-build and P3 projects.

2011 – Modern Niagara Saskatchewan is born and the company is awarded the contract for the Saskatoon Police Headquarters.

2013 – New acquisitions and partnership expand the Group’s coverage and capabilities:

  • A Building Controls line of business is founded as an authorized Systems Integration Partner of Distech Controls
  • The Ottawa Building Services division doubles in size through the acquisition of Breneck Technical Services Inc. in Ottawa

Modern Niagara Group undertakes a brand alignment initiative, launches a refined corporate identity, brand platform, look and feel.

2014 – Modern Niagara Edmonton expands the company’s footprint in Alberta.

2015 – Modern Niagara Ottawa integrates Gorlan Mechanical and creates a vertically integrated powerhouse to deliver Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, and Services.

2016 – Modern Niagara undertakes strategic acquisitions and re-organization to meet its 2020 vision of delivering key capabilities in major markets across Canada. This includes:

  • Acquisition of Laser Electric in Ottawa
  • Acquisition of Industrial Electric in Toronto
  • Modern Niagara Vancouver office opens to support expansion into B.C.
